Few posters in the WPA collection sell the outdoors as directly as this 1936 silkscreen, which pairs a cascading waterfall with a plain call to visit the national parks. The Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, produced images like this to encourage Americans to travel within their own country during the Depression, when long trips were out of reach for many. Silkscreen let artists lay down bold, flat fields of color, so the design reads quickly from across a room or a roadside. A date stamp on the back, July 1940, records when the board was filed, years after printing.
