The subject here is Montana, a state the "See America" series presented as a destination in its own right. R. Halls designed the poster in 1936 for the Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, which used posters like this to encourage Americans to travel within their own country during the Depression, when distant trips were out of reach for many families. Silkscreen suited the job because it produced flat, bold areas of color and could be printed in multiples at low cost. A date stamp on the back, September 2, 1938, shows the sheet was still in circulation or storage two years after it was made.
