Few posters on this board pair a cowboy with rock formations as directly as this one, and that combination is what sets it apart. Frank S. Nicholson designed it in New York under the Works Progress Administration's Federal Art Project, a New Deal program that employed artists during the Depression and produced travel posters encouraging Americans to explore their own country. Silkscreen allowed flat, bold areas of color to be printed cheaply in quantity and read clearly from a distance. A date stamp on the back, June 28, 1939, shows the poster was in circulation within a few years of its creation.
