Caves are the particular subject here, and the "See America" slogan invites viewers to treat underground wonders as worthy destinations for travel within their own country. Made by the Federal Art Project in New York between 1936 and 1939, it belongs to a broader Works Progress Administration effort to promote tourism during the Depression, when many Americans had little money but still wanted to explore. Silkscreen let artists print bold, flat areas of color in large runs at low cost, which is a large part of why these posters still look so distinctive. A June 1939 date stamp on the back shows the sheet was in circulation while the program was still active.
