A 1936 silkscreen poster, "Work pays America! Prosperity.," puts its message in a short slogan, and its catalog record credits the Federal theater Project as sponsor. That pairing shows how New Deal arts programs were often used to promote public work and economic recovery. The Works Progress Administration, created in 1935 and renamed the Work Projects Administration in 1939, employed millions of out-of-work Americans on roads, buildings, and cultural projects during the Great Depression. Its poster programs turned silkscreen printing into a public art form, and posters like this one argued that steady jobs and national prosperity went hand in hand at a time when many families had little of either.
