Its slogan, "Work promotes confidence," is printed boldly across this 1936 silkscreen poster, a message aimed at people who had lost jobs during the Depression. The Works Progress Administration, created in 1935, employed artists to design posters for its programs, and silkscreen allowed inexpensive runs in flat, vivid color that could be pasted on walls and storefronts. The record credits the Federal theater Project in New York as sponsor, linking the poster to the WPA's theater arm, which employed actors, writers and directors. Posters like this one aimed to reassure as well as recruit, presenting steady work as a path to self-respect.
