Few posters in the WPA collection announce a lecture, and this one promotes a talk by Sherwood Eddy (1871-1963), an author and speaker who wrote widely on world affairs and social questions. Its title, "America and the World Crisis," places the event in the anxious years of the Depression and the rise of military conflict abroad. The Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, sponsored posters like this one to publicize community events and cultural programs. Printed in silkscreen, it reflects the bold, flat color and direct lettering that the program used to reach ordinary audiences in towns such as Des Moines, Iowa.
