Advertising a talk on whether democracy had run its course, this silkscreen poster announces a Des Moines appearance by Lyman Bryson, the educator who led public discussion forums in the 1930s. Bryson (1888-1959) was known for bringing lectures and debates to ordinary audiences, at a time when many Americans wondered whether democratic government could withstand the Depression and the rise of authoritarian regimes in Europe. The Federal Art Project sponsored posters like this one to publicize community events, and the silkscreen method allowed designers to produce bold, inexpensive sheets for public display.
