This Federal Art Project poster announces a public forum in Des Moines, Iowa, featuring H. Duncan Hall, a former high official of the League of Nations. The League, based in Geneva, had been unable to stop Italy's invasion of Ethiopia in 1935 and 1936, so an evening on international affairs carried real urgency for Midwestern audiences. The Works Progress Administration's art project employed artists to publicize free community lectures, concerts and classes during the Depression. Its silkscreen process allowed inexpensive runs in bold, flat color, well suited to posting in shop windows and public buildings.
