Few things set this poster apart like its bill of four one-act plays, one of them J. M. Synge's *Riders to the Sea*, a tragedy of an Aran Islands family facing the sea's toll. Synge's play, first staged in Dublin in 1904, is a staple of the one-act form. This silkscreen was produced under the Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, which hired artists during the Depression to make posters advertising public events. Its date stamp of July 18, 1939, places it in the years when these posters were a common way to announce community entertainment across the country.
