This 1938 silkscreen poster advertises a Los Angeles production of Clemence Dane's play about William Shakespeare, titled "Will Shakespeare: His Life and Loves," staged at the Hollywood Playhouse. It is one of many posters produced under the Federal theater Project, the New Deal arm of the Works Progress Administration that employed artists, actors and designers during the Depression and promoted theater to audiences who could rarely afford it. The bold color screenprinting of the period gave these posters their striking flat shapes and lettering, and this one shows how the program used commercial-style graphics to draw crowds to stage productions across the country.
