Shaw's comedy about Julius Caesar and the young Egyptian queen was written at the close of the nineteenth century, and this 1938 poster advertises a Los Angeles revival of it at the Hollywood Playhouse. The production was tied to the Federal theater Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, which employed actors, designers and stagehands during the Depression and staged plays across the country. Posters for these productions were often printed in silkscreen, a method that let artists work in bold flat color on a modest budget. The record also lists Ashton Herbert Jr. as a sponsor, a reminder of the local people who kept the city's stages running in those years.
