Advertising a satirical revue of Hollywood, this 1937 poster points to the Hollywood Playhouse on Vine near Hollywood Boulevard, a venue set in the heart of the film town it mocked. The show's title, "Revue of Reviews," signals a send-up of the critics and the studio publicity machine. The Federal theater Project, a branch of the Works Progress Administration, sponsored the production to keep theater workers employed during the Depression. Its posters were printed by silkscreen, a method that let designers lay down flat, bold areas of color, which is why this sheet reads so clearly from a distance.
