This silkscreen poster advertises *Gaieties of 1936*, a musical revue staged in Los Angeles under the Federal theater Project, the branch of the Works Progress Administration that put out-of-work actors, writers, and stagehands back to work during the Great Depression. The Federal theater Project ran theater companies across the country and aimed to bring affordable live performance to audiences who could rarely pay for Broadway or commercial shows. Its posters were usually produced by the WPA's graphic arts units, which relied on the silkscreen process to print bold, flat areas of color cheaply in large runs. Posters like this one are now valued as both theater history and an example of 1930s American graphic design.
