*Gaieties of 1936* was a musical revue staged in Los Angeles, and this silkscreen poster promoted it under the Federal theater Project, the New Deal program that put actors, directors and stagehands back to work during the Depression. The project's Federal Stage Shows division, part of the Works Progress Administration (later the Work Projects Administration), commissioned posters like this one, and the silkscreen method let artists produce bold, multicolored designs in large runs at low cost. Such posters were among the most visible traces of a theater program that staged productions across the country until Congress ended its funding in 1939.
