This silkscreen poster announces a 1940 talk in Iowa by Pierre van Paasen, a foreign correspondent and author whose reporting from Europe in the 1930s made him a known voice on the rise of fascism. The lecture's title, which begins "Democracy's Last S...", reflects the anxiety of an autumn when Germany had overrun much of Western Europe, including the Netherlands, van Paasen's homeland. The Works Progress Administration's Federal Art Project produced posters like this one to publicize community events, and the date stamped on the back, October 29, 1940, places the piece during the run-up to the U.S. presidential election.
