Michigan Art Month, announced on this 1936 silkscreen poster, asked residents to know and buy the work of the state's own artists and to look for sales in their home communities. The Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, sponsored it, and the design reflects the program's wider push to bring art into everyday public life during the Depression. Federal Art Project posters from these years were often produced by silkscreen, a relatively inexpensive method that let artists print bold, flat areas of color in small runs. Hanging in post offices, libraries, and storefronts, posters like this one served as both public notices and examples of the era's graphic design.
