The poster announces Art Week, held November 25 to December 1, 1940, with the blunt slogan "Buy American art." It was produced by the New York City branch of the Works Progress Administration's Federal Art Project, which used silkscreen to make inexpensive, eye-catching posters for public events. The campaign reflected the nationalist mood of 1940, when war in Europe had many Americans wanting to support homegrown artists and industries. The printed date stamp on the back, January 21, 1941, shows the poster was filed after the event had ended.
