Built around a museum show, this poster announces *Half a century of American art* at the Art Institute of Chicago, which ran from November 16, 1939, into early January. Like other WPA posters, it was produced under the Federal Art Project, one of the New Deal programs that employed out-of-work artists during the Depression. It was printed by silkscreen, a method that suited bold, flat areas of color. The stamp on the back, dated February 16, 1940, shows that the poster was still being handled and filed after the exhibition had closed.
