A silkscreen poster advertising the 51st annual exhibition of American painting and sculpture at the Art Institute of Chicago, dated 1936, belongs to the Work Projects Administration Poster Collection at the Library of Congress. The Art Institute's annual shows were a long-running showcase for contemporary American artists, and this one arrived in the middle of the Great Depression, when the federal government was employing artists to make public posters. The Federal Art Project, part of the WPA, sponsored this print, so it reflects both the exhibition and the New Deal effort to put artists to work while bringing art to a wide public.
