The 49th annual exhibition of American paintings and sculpture was one of the Art Institute of Chicago's long-running showcases of contemporary American art, and this 1936 silkscreen poster announces it in bold flat color. It was produced under the Work Projects Administration, the New Deal agency that employed artists to make public posters, and its sponsorship by the Federal Writers Project places it among the WPA's many cultural and public-information efforts. The Art Institute's annual exhibitions were a major stage for American painters and sculptors during the 1930s, when the Depression limited sales and galleries looked for new audiences. Note how the poster uses simplified shapes and hard-edged color typical of WPA screen printing.
