Here a museum show and a commuter line share one poster. It advertises the 49th annual exhibition of American paintings and sculpture at the Art Institute of Chicago and urges viewers to ride the North Shore Line, the electric interurban that carried passengers up the lake shore toward Milwaukee. Annual American shows at the institute drew large crowds in the 1930s, and a train ride was an easy way to reach the galleries. Like many Works Progress Administration posters, it was printed by silkscreen, a method suited to bold, flat color and simple lettering. A stamp on the back dated October 31, 1938 shows the board was kept and handled well after its first printing.
