A 1936 silkscreen poster announces an exhibition of paintings, prints, murals, and sculpture by artists of the New York City Art Project, a local arm of the Federal Art Project. The Works Progress Administration employed artists during the Great Depression, and its poster division used the inexpensive silkscreen process to promote exhibitions, concerts, and public events across the country. The poster's hand-cut stencil shapes and flat areas of color show how the process let artists produce bold, legible designs in quantity. A date stamp on the back, from March 1941, shows the sheet passed through the program's files years after it was printed.
