A poster announcing an exhibition of 100 watercolors, produced in 1940 under the WPA Art Project, shows how the federal government promoted art during the Great Depression. The Works Progress Administration, created in 1935, employed out-of-work artists through its Federal Art Project, which supported painters, designers and printmakers across the country. Posters like this one advertised shows in schools, libraries and other community venues, bringing original art to towns that rarely had galleries. Its place among the flower and tree subjects reflects how often botanical themes appeared in watercolor work of the period.
