The record names this as an exhibition poster for oil paintings from the easel division of the New York City Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration's arts program. It was printed as a silkscreen, a method the WPA poster units adopted because it was cheap, flexible, and could produce bold flat color in small runs. The Federal Art Project employed artists during the Great Depression, and its easel division produced paintings that were shown in public venues across the city, so posters like this one helped bring working artists and their audiences together. A stamp on the back dates the sheet to 1941, years after the show it advertised, which suggests it was kept in a collection rather than simply posted and thrown away.
