The poster announces the International Exhibition of Water Colors at the Art Institute of Chicago, a spring 1939 show that drew on the museum's long tradition of watercolor exhibitions. It was printed in silkscreen, a low-cost method the Federal Art Project's poster units used to advertise concerts, exhibitions, and public events during the Depression. The design is attributed to Chicago artist Arlington Gregg, and the Federal Art Project sponsored the work. Its flat areas of color show how the medium suited the program's need for inexpensive, eye-catching posters.
