This 1939 poster advertises a watercolor exhibition in Boston, one of the many events the Federal Art Project staged that year. The Project was part of the Works Progress Administration, the New Deal agency that employed artists during the Depression, and its posters were often produced as color screen prints. Such posters were meant to be cheap and eye-catching, so they carried bold lettering and simple imagery that could be read quickly from a street corner or a bulletin board. Pieces like this one also record how public arts programs promoted local culture in cities like Boston during the late 1930s.
