Advertising a February show of watercolors by John Sharp at the Ottumwa Art Center, this 1936 silkscreen poster was designed and printed under the Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration's support for working artists during the Depression. Silkscreen was a practical choice for these posters because it allowed flat, bold color and could be reproduced in quantity at low cost. The date stamped on the back, January 13, 1941, shows the sheet was still in circulation or on file years after it was printed. Posters like this one carried news of local exhibitions to small Iowa communities like Ottumwa.
