A silkscreen poster from the Federal Art Project, it advertises the Art Institute of Chicago's "Art for the Public" exhibition, a 1936 show of works that the museum made available to the broader public. The Works Progress Administration, created by Congress in 1935, employed artists during the Great Depression, and its poster division produced announcements for museums, theaters, and public health campaigns across the country. The poster's back carries a stamp dated July 27, 1938, a reminder that these prints circulated and were filed long after they were first pasted up on city walls.
