Iowa's Federal Art Project produced this poster, and its slogan, "Buy your share," sets it apart from many WPA posters that simply advertised exhibitions. It promoted National Art Week in 1936, a campaign encouraging Americans to buy original art and bring it into their homes. The Depression had hit artists hard, and the Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, sought both to employ them and to build public appreciation for their work. The poster's bold silkscreen color and simple lettering reflect the program's wider reliance on affordable, widely distributed graphic design.
