*Smoke over Des Moines* asks a civic question in its title: why was the city's air so often thick with soot? Designed and printed by the Iowa Art Program under the Federal Art Project, this 1936 silkscreen advertised public forums where residents could debate local problems. Coal heating and industrial furnaces made heavy smoke common in many Midwestern cities in the 1930s, so the subject was a real local concern. The Works Progress Administration employed artists to make posters like this one, and many survive in the Library of Congress collection.
