Few posters from the WPA's Iowa Art Program carry as direct a sales pitch as this one, which urges viewers to "Buy your share" during National Art Week in 1936. Federal Art Project sponsors used such campaigns to encourage the public to buy works by working artists, at a time when many painters and printmakers had little income. The poster was made in silkscreen, a stencil printing method that the WPA poster program adopted widely because it was inexpensive and allowed flat, bold color. Its blunt, commercial wording shows how the program tried to link the public's appreciation of art with its purchase.
