Few WPA posters speak as directly to the home as this 1936 silkscreen, which pairs the slogan "American art for American homes" with an invitation to take part in National Art Week. The Federal Art Project, a New Deal program that employed artists during the Depression, sponsored the poster, and its message was that good American art belonged on ordinary living room walls, not only in museums. Silkscreen was a method the WPA poster units used to produce bold, flat color inexpensively in quantity, which is why many of these designs read clearly from a distance. The piece is held in the Library of Congress's WPA Poster Collection.
