A silkscreen poster announcing Art Week in Chicago, issued under a proclamation from Mayor Edward J. Kelly, shows how city government and federal relief programs worked together during the Depression. The Federal Art Project, part of the Works Progress Administration, sponsored the poster, and its silkscreen process let artists print bold color blocks cheaply in large runs. Chicago's arts festival drew attention to local artists who were otherwise struggling to find work, and posters like this one carried that message into streets, storefronts and public buildings.
