The first thing that sets this poster apart is its message aimed squarely at people moving into war industry: "Welcome, defense workers!" It was a silkscreen print made in 1941, when American factories were ramping up production ahead of U.S. entry into World War II, and cities such as Chicago and its suburbs saw sudden influxes of workers who needed places to live. The Works Progress Administration's Federal Art Project produced posters like this one to promote housing registration offices and rental listing bureaus, which helped match newcomers with available homes. Its bold, flat color shapes reflect the silkscreen method the program used to produce affordable public information art.
