Among the many wartime posters in the Work Projects Administration collection, this 1941 silkscreen urges New Yorkers to train as nurses aides by telephoning their borough Civilian Defense Volunteer Office. Its direct call to action reflects how the city prepared for possible air attack before the United States entered the war in December 1941. Volunteers in these roles were trained to help in hospitals and first aid stations, work that civil defense planners expected would be needed in an emergency. The Federal Art Project produced the design under the Work Projects Administration.
