Few posters of the 1939 New York World's Fair ask the public for beds instead of tickets. This silkscreen print, produced under the WPA Federal Art Project, calls for 10,000 guest homes and 1,000 furnished houses to be ready for visitors by March 15, a call sponsored by the village of Hempstead for the Nassau County Association. The fair drew crowds to Flushing Meadows in 1939 and 1940, and towns within commuting range of the city were scrambling for lodging, so the poster reads as a local housing drive tied to a national event. Its bold color and blunt wording make it a useful record of how Depression-era artists turned civic messages into public advertising.
