Dated May 1, 1937, this silkscreen poster from Illinois District 6 promotes a "March of Leisure Time," and its subject ties the event to Springfield, the state capital. Like much of the Works Progress Administration's output, it was produced under the Federal Art Project, which employed artists during the Depression to make inexpensive public notices for government-sponsored programs. Posters of this kind were usually printed in small runs and pasted on walls and storefronts, so a surviving example, stamped on the back with a May 22, 1937 date, offers a glimpse of how federal recreation programs were advertised to ordinary residents of the period.
