This 1936 silkscreen poster, titled "The national parks preserve wild life," pairs a message about conservation with a depiction of mountain sheep. J. Hirt designed it under the Federal Art Project of the Works Progress Administration, part of the New Deal effort that used posters to promote public services and travel during the Depression. The National Park Service, which was then working to build public support and draw visitors, is named among its subjects, along with tourism. The date stamp on the back, August 23, 1939, shows that the poster was still being handled and filed several years after it was printed.
