Eisenhower's March 1945 visit to the port of Cherbourg places this picture in the logistics behind the Allied advance into Germany. American forces had taken the harbor in June 1944, and engineers worked to restore its docks so ships could land troops and supplies. The record also names African American servicemen among its subjects, a reminder that Black units, many assigned to port and transport work, were essential to moving cargo through the harbor. Eisenhower, then Supreme Allied Commander in Europe, made such tours to see the work that kept his armies supplied.
