Few images from 1991 capture the end of the Soviet experiment as bluntly as this cartoon, which places Karl Marx, Vladimir Lenin, Joseph Stalin and Mikhail Gorbachev together under the heading of a funeral. The cartoon ran in the Waterbury Republican and the Middletown Press, and it was reprinted in a collection of Edmund S. Valtman's editorial work and in an annual best-of volume. Its year matters: by late 1991, the Soviet Union was dissolving, and cartoonists across the United States were treating communism's collapse as a matter of history rather than prediction. The title's expression of disbelief captures the surprise many observers felt as the system gave way.
