Port Royal is a small river town on the Rappahannock in Virginia, and this stereograph records the Union withdrawal from it on May 30, 1864, during the Overland Campaign, when Union forces were pushing south toward Richmond. The card was issued by the Hartford firm of Taylor & Huntington, but the record notes it was printed later, in the 1890s, from an original wartime glass negative. Stereographs like this were meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, which gave the scene a sense of depth and made troop movements seem immediate to home audiences.
