Germanna Ford, on the Rapidan River in Virginia, is the site this pencil drawing shows as the Army of the Potomac crossed on May 5, 1864, the first day of Ulysses S. Grant's campaign against Richmond. The army then moved into the Wilderness, a dense tangle of scrub and second-growth woods where fighting began within days. The drawing is one of the Civil War sketches in the Library of Congress collection, and its caption describes the crossing as the first day's advance of the campaign.
