Alfred R. Waud drew this pencil sketch in the field, showing the Bucktails forcing a path through thick brush toward the edge of the woods. The Bucktails, a Pennsylvania rifle unit, fought on Samuel W. Crawford's front in the Wilderness, the tangled second-growth woods of Virginia where Grant and Lee clashed from May 5 to 7, 1864. An inscription on the back says the regiment did good work there but was left behind when Crawford suddenly fell back without notice, leaving it in a bad spot. The dense undergrowth, which kept troops from seeing far, made the Wilderness a hard battlefield for both armies.
