Few battle sketches from the Shenandoah Valley carry a title as specific as this one, which records a September 19, 1864, moment of Crook's corps storming toward a fort during the fighting near Winchester. Known as the Third Battle of Winchester or the Battle of Opequon, the engagement was a central clash in Philip Sheridan's campaign to drive Confederate forces from the valley, and George Crook commanded the Union troops shown here. The drawing combines pencil with Chinese white on tan paper, a combination that suggests a quick working sketch, with the white used to pick out highlights on the figures.
