A pencil drawing dated May 11, 1864, names a specific place, the Brock road, and the Union 2nd Corps, which sets it apart from the broader battle views on this board. The Wilderness fighting in northern Virginia, from May 5 to 7, 1864, had ended in a bloody standoff, and Ulysses S. Grant's Army of the Potomac was then moving southeast toward Spotsylvania. The Brock road ran through the dense scrub of the Wilderness and had been a contested route during the battle. The drawing's inscription and initials suggest a soldier or observer recording a scene from the campaign on the spot, and its small, direct pencil work reflects the field sketches that circulated in the northern press.
