Drawn in pencil on May 7, 1864, this sketch shows the 6th Corps fighting in the woods just east of Wilderness Tavern, in Virginia. The battle began May 5 as Union and Confederate forces collided in a tangle of second-growth scrub and pine, where visibility was often limited to a few yards and smoke and brush fires made it hard to see the lines. The sketch carries only the initials "E.F." as its maker, and it reached the Library of Congress as a gift in 1919, so it stands as a field impression of a battle in which terrain often mattered as much as troop movements.
