Zachary Taylor appears here at the height of his fame, linked to the Battle of Buena Vista, fought in February 1847 near Saltillo in northern Mexico. Taylor's outnumbered American force held off a much larger Mexican army under Antonio López de Santa Anna, and the victory made him a national hero. New York printmakers Sarony & Major turned out portraits like this one for a public eager for images of the war's heroes, and the hand coloring gives the sheet the bright, popular look typical of the period. Taylor rode that wave of acclaim to the presidency in 1848.
