Miguel Covarrubias drew this caricature of three figures from the Harlem Renaissance social circle: the writer and photographer Carl Van Vechten, his wife, the actress Fania Marinoff, and the singer Taylor Gordon. It appeared as an illustration in Gordon's memoir, *Born to Be*, published in New York by Covici-Friede in 1929. During the late 1920s, Covarrubias, a Mexican artist working in New York, became known for exaggerated portraits of writers, performers and socialites for *Vanity Fair*. His quick, witty line work turns each sitter's features into shorthand, and the drawing records the mix of white patrons and Black artists that defined that scene.
