James Van DerZee's 1924 photograph shows Marcus Garvey in Harlem alongside members of the Garvey Militia, the uniformed corps attached to his Universal Negro Improvement Association. Garvey, the Jamaican-born leader whose movement drew large followings in New York during the 1920s, promoted Black pride, economic self-reliance and a back-to-Africa program. Van DerZee, a Harlem studio photographer, documented the neighborhood's social and civic life throughout that decade. This print was made around 1974, when it was issued as plate VII in an edition of 75 portfolios of his work.
